PVB was invented over 80 years ago and has been the primary interlayer material for laminated safety glass since the late 1930s. PVB is a resin commonly used in glass applications that require adhesion, light transmission, glass surface adhesion, toughness, and elasticity. The main applications of PVB are as an interlayer for laminated safety glass in construction and as a windshield in automobiles.
PVB was invented over 80 years ago and has been the primary interlayer material for laminated safety glass since the late 1930s. PVB is a resin typically used in glass applications that require adhesion, light transmission, glass surface adhesion, toughness, and elasticity. The main application of PVB is to serve as the interlayer for laminated safety glass in construction and automotive windshields.
The PVB interlayer combines toughness and flexibility, so brittle cracks on one side of the laminated glass do not propagate to the other side. The PVB interlayer is specifically developed for automotive applications, aiming to reduce injuries caused by head impacts in traffic accidents. Over 90% of laminated safety glass interlayers are made from PVB material.
In building applications, PVB is mainly used in full-frame windows, insulated hollow glass, and glass applications that require edge protection. Other types of PVB interlayers include soundproof PVB interlayers that can improve acoustic comfort. Rigid PVB interlayers are primarily used in building applications and structural glass in aircraft windshields, enhancing the hardness of glass in full-frame applications.
In high-performance curtain walls, filled glass materials play an increasingly important role, thus the demand for such curtain walls will drive us to continue choosing laminated glass in modern building projects.
According to the 'China PVB Interlayer Market Deep Research and Investment Strategy Report (2018 Edition)' published by Limu Information Consulting: PVB is short for polyvinyl butyral, and PVB interlayer (also known as PVB film) is extruded from PVB resin (about 70% plus additives (about) 30%) and other auxiliaries.
Over 80% of PVB production in the world is controlled by three large chemical companies: Mansui in the United States, Kuraray in Japan, and Sekisui in Japan. Currently, domestic production can also yield good PVB interlayer products, which are mainly used in the military industry, with the vast majority applied in ordinary construction and low-end automotive components.
In the domestic PVB interlayer market application, the PVB interlayer used in Chinese automotive safety glass is about 50,000 tons, with a market value of approximately 2.1 billion yuan. The PVB interlayer used in Chinese building safety glass is about 45,000 tons, with a market value of approximately 1.5 billion yuan.
